If you’re a member of Britain’s horse racing upper echelons then you may know the answer – which is that they are all linked to one of the Britain’s greatest horse breeding estates Stetchworth Park in Newmarket Cambridgeshire.

STETCHWORTH PARK CAMBRIDGESHIRE STORY

The property which includes a grand Georgian eight bedroom mansion two cottages five staff flats and three apartments within its indoor arena is on the market for £11m but offers much more than upmarket accommodation.

Horses have been its main concern since Stetchworth was put on the map in 1833 by the 3rd Earl of Ellesmere. He bought an existing estate off the Eaton family and established a stud which members of his families continued until his grandson the 6th Duke of Sutherland (who eschewed the Ellesmere title and his place in the Lords) sold up in the 1960s.

John Sutherland the sixth duke was a “shy man” but nevertheless spent time in the limelight after the Second World War. He was captured in 1940 and spent the rest of the hostilities as a prisoner but his joy at being liberated in 1945 was short lived. He found out soon afterward that he faced a huge death tax bill for his various properties – for his father had passed away during his incarceration.

Despite a furore in parliament in order to pay the duty he sold off his family’s London residence Bridgwater House a vast palace overlooking Green Park that still stands today. It has for some time been owned by a Greek shipping magnate.

But that wasn’t the end of his financial problems and in the 1950s he sold off many of his family’s vast collection of Old Master paintings including several Titans and a van Dyck. Stetchworth Park was also sold in 1960 to a horse breeder called Douglas Gray who subsequently sold it in 1982 to Bill Gredley one of Britain’s best-known and wealthiest horse breeders and father of show jumper and Olympic hopeful Tim Gredley.

Bill Gredley’s most famous winner is User Friendly which won three Classics five Group One races came second in the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe and was named as the 1992 European Horse of the Year and European Champion Three-Year-Old filly.

Other famous horses bred at the stud include Environment Friend and Toffee Nosed, but what the equine inclined will really love are the estate Olympic standard indoor and outdoor arenas two ‘horse solariums’ show jumping grass arena four-furlong all-weather canter 46 boxes plus parkland and paddocks totalling 116 acres.
